Rwanda Red Cross Society (RRCS) commenced its operations in Rwanda in 1964. It was created through a presidential decree number 8/13 of 29 December 1964. It has legal status as a Non-Governmental humanitarian relief organization and it operates through a network of members and volunteers spanning the whole country.
Today, RRCS operates through a decentralized network. The Society has 30 District committees and 416 sector committees which are operational with over 62,000 members and active volunteers.

Rwanda's President
Rwanda's President, Paul Kagame, has frequently spoken about the importance of the Red Cross in Rwanda’s development and humanitarian landscape. He has highlighted the Rwanda Red Cross's efforts in disaster management, health responses, and their contribution to promoting peace and security, especially during the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Kagame has emphasized the Red Cross’s critical role in fostering social cohesion and offering vital support during difficult times.
