Established in July 1962, Rwanda Red Cross is a non-governmental organization, acting as an auxiliary to the public authorities. On 21 March 1964, the government of Rwanda signed the Geneva Convention.
On 29 December 1964, Rwanda Red Cross was officially recognized in Rwanda. On 8 October 1982, the International Committee of Red Cross recognized it as well. On 8 October 1983, Rwanda Red Cross gained its membership in International Committee of Red Cross and Red Crescent. In 1989, Rwanda Red Cross society organized its first general assembly.

A leading humanitarian organization in Rwanda in preventing and alleviating human suffering, saving lives of the most vulnerable, supporting livelihoods, and promoting human dignity.
The war and genocide of 1994 have also destroyed the national society. In 1995, with the support of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, Rwanda Red Cross resumed its activities. In 1997, the second general assembly was held.
In 1999, there was the restructuring of the Red Cross and adoption of the decentralization policy. In 2002, Rwanda Red Cross organized the third general assembly and adopted the strategic plan 2002-2006. In 2006, the fourth general assembly took place and the 2007-2011 strategic plan was adopted.
During the year 2008, Rwanda Red Cross held the fifth general assembly and the first National Youth Council.

As a member of the International Committee of Red Cross, Rwanda Red Cross society, in all its activities, is bound by seven fundamental principles upon which the humanitarian values are grounded across the world.
Those principles are Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary service, unity and Universality.
In addition to seven fundamental principles aforementioned, Rwanda Red Cross also bases on additional values that underlie and guide the RRC in its activities.

The specific missions of Rwanda Red Cross are:
To train the citizens to be provident and to react against natural disasters.
To organize, basing on the national plan in first aid service to assist the victims of natural disasters.
To encourage youth involvement in Rwanda Red Cross activities.
To contribute to health improvement, disease prevention, and alleviation of suffering by means of trainings, mutuality and programs adopted for vulnerable people.
To contribute to the population development through the projects of public interests such as public health, social work as well as education.
To cooperate with national and international organizations aiming the same objective at promoting and strengthening universal humanitarian values.
To recruit, train and appoint the personnel at the headquarters level and local committees to accomplish the tasks they are assigned. Mobilize volunteers in various activities in order to strengthen the capacity building of the national society at all levels.
To act during the armed conflicts and get prepared in peacetime as an auxiliary to the public health service in all domains as planned by Geneva conventions with priority to the civilian war victims as well as soldiers.
To disseminate the movement’s fundamental principles, international humanitarian law and the fundamental human values amongst the population chiefly the youth. Similarly, it aims at ensuring respect for the human being and promotion of the mutual understanding amongst people.
Rwanda Red Cross Society (RRCS) commenced its operations in Rwanda in 1964. It was created through a presidential decree number 8/13 of 29 December 1964.
